Insect bite treatment in Koh Samui

Fast relief for itchy, swollen or infected bites from mosquitoes, ants and centipedes at our walk-in clinic in Chaweng.

Why bites are worse in the tropics

Koh Samui's warm, humid climate means insects are active year-round, and a bite that would be a minor nuisance at home can turn into something more troublesome here. Mosquitoes are the most common culprit, but travellers also come to us with painful fire ant stings, reactions to sandflies on the beach, and the occasional centipede bite, which can be surprisingly painful and cause significant swelling. Scratching in the heat easily breaks the skin, and tropical bacteria do the rest, so what starts as an itch can quickly become an infected sore.

Our insect bite treatment in Koh Samui is aimed at three things: calming the itch and swelling, preventing you from scratching a wound into an infection, and spotting the rare bite that needs more than symptom relief.

What to expect at our clinic

You do not need an appointment. Walk in, and an English-speaking doctor will examine the bite, ask what stung or bit you if you know, and check whether it is a simple local reaction or something spreading. Depending on what we find, care may include:

  • Cleaning and dressing any broken or weeping skin
  • Anti-itch and anti-inflammatory treatment to settle redness and swelling
  • Antihistamines for widespread itching or a strong local reaction
  • Antibiotics if a bite has already become infected
  • A tetanus booster where a deeper puncture makes it sensible

We have an on-site pharmacy, so you leave with everything you need rather than hunting for a chemist. An in-house lab is available if we need to check for infection. If you would rather not travel with an inflamed bite, our doctors also make visits to hotels and villas across the island.

When a bite needs urgent care

Most bites are harmless, but some warning signs mean you should seek care straight away. Come in promptly, or for the most serious signs go to the nearest hospital emergency department immediately, if you notice:

  • Difficulty breathing, throat tightness, or swelling of the lips, tongue or face
  • Dizziness, fainting or a widespread rash after a bite or sting
  • Spreading redness, heat, pus or a red streak tracking away from the bite
  • Fever, chills or feeling generally unwell in the days after being bitten

A severe whole-body reaction can be a medical emergency and should not wait. Fever after mosquito exposure also deserves attention, since it can point to a mosquito-borne illness; if that is a concern we can guide you toward the right testing and dengue fever treatment in Koh Samui. If a scratched bite has clearly turned into an infected wound, see our page on skin infection treatment in Koh Samui, and for a strong allergic response our allergic reaction treatment in Koh Samui may be more relevant.
