Fit to fly certificate in Koh Samui
Do you need a doctor to confirm you are safe to travel by air? Our English-speaking physicians issue airline-accepted fit to fly certificates the same day at our Bang Rak walk-in clinic, or at your hotel anywhere on the island.
What a fit to fly certificate is
A fit to fly certificate is a signed travel medical certificate in which a licensed doctor states that, after examination, you are medically safe to board a flight. Airlines can deny boarding to a passenger who appears unwell, recently injured or heavily pregnant, so this document reassures check-in staff and protects you from being turned away at Samui International Airport. Samui Medical Clinic sits nearby in Bang Rak at The Greens at Bangrak Bay, minutes from the Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai), and conveniently serves Chaweng, Bang Rak and Bophut. Our reception team can usually complete the whole process well within an hour.
When travellers need one
Requirements vary by airline, so it helps to check your carrier’s policy, but a certificate is commonly required in these situations:
- Flying after recent surgery, a hospital stay or a motorbike accident with fractures or fresh stitches
- Pregnancy past 28 weeks, when most airlines request a doctor’s letter to fly
- Travelling with a cast, sling, recent wound or another visible medical condition
- Recovering from an illness such as pneumonia, dengue or a chest infection
- Rebooking after missing a flight through sickness, when an airline or insurer wants medical clearance
Because timing rules differ, many carriers ask that the certificate be issued within a set window, often 72 hours before departure. Send us your travel date and we will make sure yours is dated correctly.
How the assessment works
No appointment is needed at our walk-in clinic, and a doctor is on call 24 hours for urgent cases. Our physician reviews your medical history, performs a physical examination, checks your vital signs and, where needed, runs quick tests in the on-site laboratory before signing the certificate. The pharmacy on site can dispense any medication prescribed for the journey. Please bring your passport, flight details and any hospital documentation if you were treated elsewhere. If your airline supplied a specific MEDIF medical information form, bring that too and the doctor will complete it.
If you cannot come to us
If you are on bed rest, injured or staying on the far side of the island, our doctor can come to you. We arrange hotel and villa visits island-wide and complete the same examination at your accommodation, then issue the certificate on the spot. This is a popular choice for families and for travellers who are simply not well enough to sit in a waiting room.
Flying after diving, illness or injury
Some conditions genuinely affect flight safety. After scuba diving, allow a proper surface interval before flying, generally at least 12 hours following a single no-decompression dive and 18 hours or more after repetitive dives. Blocked ears or sinuses from an infection can make cabin descent painful, so an examination is wiser than gambling on the flight. Importantly, do not fly and seek urgent hospital care if you have chest pain, severe breathlessness, coughing blood or sudden severe abdominal pain. Our doctor will always tell you honestly if it is not yet safe to travel.
Cost and insurance
The fit to fly examination and certificate is a clear fixed-fee service quoted before you start, and we offer direct billing with most travel insurers when the assessment forms part of covered treatment. If your airline or employer only needs written confirmation of an illness, a standard medical certificate may be all you require, and we issue both. To be cleared and ready for check-in today, walk in, message us on WhatsApp or call our English-speaking team.
Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly can I get a fit to fly certificate in Koh Samui?
In most cases the same day. As a walk-in clinic we examine you, run any needed tests in our on-site lab, and issue the signed certificate usually within about an hour, so you can travel without delay.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Simply walk in on any day, or message us first with your flight details. A doctor is also on call 24 hours for urgent departures.
Will airlines accept a certificate from your clinic?
Yes. Our certificate is issued and signed by a licensed Thai physician in English, which the major airlines flying from Samui recognise. If your carrier has a specific form or MEDIF, bring it and our doctor will complete it.
When should the certificate be issued before my flight?
Many airlines require it within a set window before departure, often 72 hours. Tell us your travel date and we will date the certificate to match your airline’s policy.
Can a doctor issue the certificate at my hotel?
Yes. If you are unwell or injured, we arrange hotel and villa visits across Chaweng, Bang Rak, Bophut and island-wide, and complete the full examination at your accommodation.
I am pregnant. Do I need a fit to fly letter?
Most airlines request a doctor’s letter once you pass 28 weeks, and some earlier for multiple pregnancies. Our doctor will examine you and, if all is well, confirm your estimated due date and fitness to fly in writing.
I recently had a motorbike accident or surgery. Can I still fly?
Often yes, once you are stable, but it depends on your injuries and how recent the surgery was. Bring your hospital paperwork and the doctor will assess whether cabin pressure and prolonged sitting are safe for you.
Does travel insurance cover the assessment?
Frequently, yes. We provide English medical reports and receipts for reimbursement and offer direct billing with most travel insurers when the examination is part of covered treatment.
Need your certificate before you board?
Open daily with a doctor on call 24 hours, and we also visit hotels and villas island-wide.
