What an allergic reaction actually is

An allergic reaction happens when your immune system treats a harmless substance, an allergen, as a threat and releases histamine and other chemicals into the body. That flood is what produces the classic signs: itchy raised hives, red or blotchy skin, swelling around the lips or eyes, a runny nose (allergic rhinitis), watery eyes, sneezing, an itchy mouth or throat, or stomach cramps after eating. Most reactions are mild and common, and settle within hours, especially once the trigger is removed and the right medication is on board.

On a tropical island the list of possible triggers grows. Unfamiliar seafood and tropical fruit, street-food ingredients, high pollen and dust exposure, latex, sunscreen chemicals, new medications and insect venom are all frequent causes among visitors to Chaweng, Bang Rak and Bophut. Red flags: when to seek emergency care now

A small number of reactions become severe and life-threatening. This is called anaphylaxis and it is a medical emergency. Do not wait for a clinic appointment if you notice difficulty breathing or wheezing, tightness or swelling in the throat or tongue, a swollen face, a rapid or weak pulse, dizziness, fainting, or widespread swelling coming on fast. Call an ambulance or go straight to the nearest hospital emergency department. If you carry an adrenaline auto-injector and know how to use it, use it while help is on the way, then still get to hospital.
